Altos de Chavon Amphitheater

The Altos de Chavón amphitheater is one of the wonders of Casa de Campo. Built in the 1980s it has been host to many events, concerts and stage performances since it’s 1983 inaugural concerts featuring Frank Sinatra with Buddy Rich and Santana and Heart. The theater has boasted greats like Sting, Luis Miguel, Julio and Enrique Iglesias, Celia Cruz, Sir Elton John, Juanes, and many more. They come because of the intimate feel of a smaller venue and the perfect acoustics that amphitheaters are known for.

The 5,000 seat theater was designed and built by Architect and Movie Set Designer Roberto Copa, inspired by the Greek theaters of antiquity. To add to the total feel of the Greek ruins, Copa even added semi buried and “broken” columns on the hill behind the the theater, completing the “set”. Enjoying any event in this theater transports you to another era making you forget that you are in the Caribbean.

One of the most striking features of the theater is the stonework–thousands of stones were hand-cut by a group of artisans to fit in the specific spot where they were used. With these stones Copa created a palette of textures that he used throughout Altos de Chavon the way an artist uses colors. But, the amphitheater is by far the pinnacle of his artistry–the result is breath taking.

Come and see for yourself the beauty and craftsmanship of the amphitheater. Even if there isn’t during an event, it is a site to see.
